Bobby barely slept Saturday night. He slipped out of bed, showered and dressed, then knocked on June’s door. She was awake as well and they headed down to the hotel lobby for an early breakfast.

Their conversation was all about what Brad Lawrence had dumped on them the previous evening. Lawrence had gone a step further than simply running a paternity test, he had also dug into one of the NSA databanks and pulled off a past history of the president’s life to see if their theory made sense.

The timing worked perfectly. In the mid-80s, William Neilson was a young, married, upwardly mobile member of the senate. He was pressing the flesh a lot, developing the alliances and contacts inside the political machine that would later carry him to the presidency. Now it appeared he had pressed a bit too much flesh, in particular with a woman who wasn’t his wife. The result was twin girls who were now thirty-five years old, one of which was Alexis Chamberlain.

“So who’s the other girl?” Bobby said as they sipped their coffee and waited for breakfast.

“Who indeed,” June said. She set her cup on her napkin. “Do you think Neilson knows about this?”

Bobby shook his head. “My guess is that he doesn’t, but some things are beginning to make sense.”

“Like?”

“When I was interviewing Percy and Etonia Rothchild, she mentioned that the Neilsons are their neighbors in the Hamptons. Even if William Neilson didn’t know about Alexis and her sister, you can bet the parents did. It’s too much coincidence for them to own beach houses a hundred yards from each other.”

“So the birthmother brokered some sort of a deal with the Neilsons, and the Rothchilds took one of the girls. She probably got a whack of cash.”

“No shit,” Bobby said. “Neilson was a senator at the time. A scandal would have derailed him.”

“His parents stepped in and took care of things. The Rothchilds didn’t think they could have children so they were more than willing to take Alexis. All those summers, the Neilsons had their granddaughter right next door.”

“Exactly.” Breakfast had arrived, and Bobby pushed his eggs around on the plate. “But why only one daughter? How would you choose? Why not adopt both babies? Surely the Neilsons would have pushed for that as well.”

June was already halfway through her stack of pancakes. She finished chewing and swallowed. “Unless they didn’t know about the second girl.”

Bobby’s fork was an inch from his mouth and he stopped right there. “The woman at the adoption agency said a midwife was involved.” He set the fork on his plate, his mind racing. “You might have just nailed it. It’s possible that no one but the birthmother and the midwife knew there were twins.”

“Oh my God, this just keeps getting better.” June looked around the bustling restaurant. The other diners were enjoying their meals, oblivious to their conversation. “So the president has two daughters, and no one knows about the second one.”

They sat in silence, staring at each other.
